Western Round-winged Katydid

Amblycorypha parvipennis

Identification 2

Most similar to Amblycorypha oblongifolia, but flightless with shorter wings. The inner hindwings do not extend at rest past the outer forewings. This species is in the A. rotundifolia group, so the key at SINA can also be used to distinguish it from A. oblongifolia.

Occurrence 2

Occurs throughout Iowa, but has not been reported in iNaturalist or BugGuide. SCAN does not have any records, either. A series of ~7 papers referenced at SINA studied this species in Iowa from the 1970s to 1990s, with specimens collected at the Ames High Prairie. SINA shows many records for Iowa.

Habitat 2

Apparently adapted to the prairie/forest interface, where it feeds on flowers.
