Landlocked Arctic Char

Salvelinus alpinus oquassa

Arctic char 2

Perhaps Colorados most unique salmonid. They only live in one reservoir in Colorado in lake Dillon. But is worth mentioning as popularity with anglers. These deep cold water dwelling fish do well in lake Dillon due to the mysis shrimp they feed on in the lake and the cold depth of lake Dillon make it ideal for them. They are most commonly encountered ice fishing as they are still very active in the cold water during winter. They can grow up 30 inches and are slow growers, a fish that size have not been encountered yet but lake Dillon provides the potential too. Lake Dillon is also one of the worlds most southern population on these fish if not the most southern population. And most definitely the most southern population in North America. The fish are characterized by their light pink spots on dark background with no blue halo unlike the brook trout. they have forked tail and usually orange tipped nose.
