Arizona Alligator Lizard

Elgaria kingii

Summary 6

The Madrean alligator lizard (Elgaria kingii ) is a large (to 140 mm, or 5.5") lizard with small limbs and a long, thick tail. Body coloration is gray or tan, with brownish crossbars, and there are often distinct white marks on the side of the face. The scales are smooth, rectangular, and shiny. Endemic to the southwestern United States and adjacent northwestern Mexico, and found in a wide variety of habitats, from semidesert grassland through montane conifer forest. The long body and small limbs make this lizard easy to distinguish from others in our region.
