Pyrgoteles cristatus

Author 5

Karsch, 1893

Synonomy 5

Druentia cristatus
Druentia maculata Risbec, 1950
Druentia variegata sensu Stal 1866

Taxonomic note 5

According to Nast 1977, this is the correct name for individuals previously referred to as Druentia variegata, which is the predominant name still used for this species in collections

Identification note 5

The taxonomy of this species has been historically confused and it appears to me personally that some of the collections pictured on this page may include multiple species. Karsch's illustration (especially in regards to the shape of the cephalic process) is probably the best representative example of this species. Individuals with the cephalic process projecting more horizontally appear to be more consistent with Pyrgoteles sicca. Rather unfortunately, the descriptions for neither of these species are sufficient or diagnostic.
