Shorthead redhose(Moxostoma macrolepidotum) usually live in the big lakes, rivers, and larger creeks. Forage along the bottom, eating aquatic insects hiding in the mud and sand. Form impressive upstream spawning migrations in the spring.

How to recognize: Mouth is on the bottom of the head. Lips are thick and fleshy, covered with small bumps that are taste buds. All scales are relatively the same size along the length of the body. Relatively small head when compared to other redhorses and suckers. Tail red. Up to 2 feet /0.6 meters long.
