Originally from eastern Asia, oriental weatherfish(Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) have been a popular pet and food fish for many decades in the United States. Established populations in Michigan, Illinois and New York. They live in wetlands or streams with very little current along bottoms that are typical muddy and with lots of aquatic plants. Eat small aquatic insect larvae and other microorganisms. Will burrow into the mud to hide. Able to survive in water that has very little oxygen.

How to recognize: A long, skinny fish with a mottled brown /gray coloration. Ten barbels /whiskers (five pairs) around the mouth. Small eye. Round tail. Up to 1 foot /0.3 meters long.
