Brook trout(Salvelinus fontinalis) are a popular sport fish. Found in cold water streams and rivers. Sometimes found in the nearshore environments of the big lakes. Usually reside out of the current behind rocks or log piles, then dart out to feed. Eat aquatic insect larvae and small fishes. Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania’s official state fish.

How to recognize: Small fleshy fin on the back in front of the tail. Pale squiggly lines on the back. Red dots surrounded by pale haloes on the sides. Fins along the bottom of the body have a white leading edge, followed by a black line and then are predominantly red. Up to 1½ feet /0.4 meters long.
