Interior Live Oak

Quercus wislizeni

Interior Live Oak (Quercus wislizeni) 2

The evergreen Interior Live Oak grows from 25 to 80 feet high. It has a short trunk and stout spreading branches which form a round-topped crown. The leaves are flat, thick and leathery. The leaves are dimorphic, meaning two different kinds of leaves can be found. The leaf margins can be smooth or prickly. The acorns are slim and pointed. This oak grows in the foothills and valleys away from the coast. Native Americans used the acorns in trading and various animals eat them.
