Western Redbud usually grows as a shrub about 15 to 18 feet high. The leaves are round and heart-shaped about 1 to 3 inches wide. The deep pink flowers appear in early spring on naked branches, which are followed by bronze colored leaves that turn grass green. The seed pods are flat and brownish-red and form in July. Redbud grows in the Sierra Nevada foothills and in the coastal ranges. Native Americans used young shoots for basket weaving.
