This deciduous oak has foliage similar to the live oak. It has a rounded crown and grows 20 to 70 feet high. The leaves are bluish green above and pale underneath. The leaves vary in size and shape and some are coarse or unevenly toothed or smooth. The bark is pale and covered with small scales. The acorns is small, about 1.5 inches long. The cup is small and has scales. The acorns were used and traded by the native Americans. Woodpeckers and other animals eat the acorns.
