California Wild Grape

Vitis californica

California Wild Grape (Vitis californica) 2

This grape can produce some very large stems up to 60 feet long and as much as 4 to 5 inches thick. The vines climb trees, especially oaks and cottonwoods, and can end up killing the tree by shutting out the light. Grape leaves are roundish, slightly lobed and dentate. The small white blossoms appear in May and June and are very fragrant. The fruit changes color from green to purple as the fruit ripens. Native Americans used the leaves to wrap foods and used the bark for twine. Many animals eat the fruit and distribute the seeds.
