This evergreen tree is was called the “Gray ghost of the Sierra” by John Muir. The tree can grow 40 to 50 feet and is often multitrunked. The needles are gray-green and are three in a bundle. The cones are 6 to 10 inches long and just as thick. The cones have large recurved spines. Most of Gray Pines occur in thin stands in the foothills. The pine nuts are a valued source for animals and were often used in trade by the native Americans.
