Another species that is much more common further east and is found near the edge of its range in eastern Missouri where it is often encountered in woodlands of varying substrates (though usually acidic). It is a tall Dichanthelium with wide leaves and large, conspicuous inflorescences that are taller than wide and adorned with small, round spikelets. The big brother of D. sphaerocarpon.

Spikelets: 1.3-1.7 mm, broadly ellipsoid-spherical, often purplish at the base, puberulent.
