Manzanita

Arctostaphylos × coloradensis

Description 2

This slow-growing, broadleaf evergreen shrub is a natural hybrid of Kinnikinnic (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) and Greenleaf Manzanita (Arctostaphylos patula). It is common on the Uncompahgre Plateau, with selections offered commercially by Plant Select as 'Panchito' and 'Chieftan.' The bark is red-purple, and the green leaves sometimes turn red over winter. It blooms with tiny, pink, urn-shaped flowers in the spring, which are followed by small red berries that resemble tiny apples.
