A reddish salamander with a long tail. Ground color variable, however, and ranging from dull yellow through orange to bright orange-red. (Young tend to be yelllow, adults reddish) the black spots are usually irregularly scattered, but sometimes they may form two or three longitudinal rows. Costal grooves 14 or 15.

Habitat: twilight zone of caves - near entranceae, where the light is weak.
