Annonaceae | pawpaw

Habitat: Rich, moist woods.

Leaves: Oblong to obovate, to 10" long, taper-pointed at the tip, untoothed, rather pale green, downy when young becoming smooth beneath, turning yellow in autumn.

Bark: Gray-brown, becoming somewhat rough and scaly with age.

Flowers: To 1 1/2" across, green at first becoming purple-brown, with six petals, the inner three upright, the outer three larger and spreading, borne singly on short, stout stalks on the old shoots in late spring as the young leaves emerge.

Fruit: Fleshy and edible, to 6" long, green at first becoming yellow-brown when ripe.

Note: Leaves aromatic - green pepper scent.
