Mottled sculpinCottus bairdii lives in cooler streams or the shorelines of big lakes. Usually lives in water that is moving, either because there is a current or wave action. Hides in crevices and cavities in rocks and rubble, coming out to grab aquatic insects to eat. Its mottled coloration can make it difficult to see until it moves.

How to recognize: Large fin on the side of the body behind the head. The two fins below the body are NOT fused into one fin that looks like a disc. Two fins on the back, the first much shorter than the second. Mottled brown. Up to 6 inches /15 centimeters long.
