The Eastern Screech Owl (Megascops asio) is a small, shy owl that resides in Pittsburgh year-round.

Description:
The only small owl with ear tufts. Both color morphs - red-brown and gray - are well camouflaged and difficult to spot. Young birds lack the ear tufts.

Habitat:
Woodlands, farm groves, shade trees.

Size:
7-10" long

Voice:
A series of mournful, high, tremulous whinnies that descend in pitch. This is often followed by a long trill on a single, lower pitch.

Behavior:
Nocturnal.
Nests in cavities like old hollow trees.

Diet:
Feeds on rodents, birds, reptiles, fish and large insects.
