Enghoff (2011, doi: 10.3897/ijm.6.1949) cites Gardner (Gardner M (1975) (“1974”) Revision of the millipede family Andrognathidae in the Nearctic region. Memoirs of the Pacific Coast Entomological Society 5: 1-61) as saying that this species has an "area of dorsum over body cylinder generally tan colored, with five brown spots on the mesal area in regularly spaced groups of four to five body segments each"

Gardner (1974) wrote,

Distinguished from alI species except petasata by concealment of head under forwardly produced collum (fig. 19); distinguished from petasata by distinctly notched caudal margin or regular paranota, and convergence of penultimate paranota dorsally over epiproct.

TYPE LOCALITY.—1 mi (1.6 km) N Mendocino, Mendocino County.
OCCURRENCE IN CALIFORNIA.—Published records: Marin and Mendocino counties. New records. Marin Co., Sam P. Taylor State Park (UCD), Mill Valley (BMNH), and Lagunetas [sic] Canyon (FSCA). Mendocino Co., 5 mi (8 km) E Anchor Bay (AMNH).
