Adults: Dark brown on head, neck and throat with white chin, chest and belly and sometimes white patches on the upper wings. They have dark brown eyes and a long grey/brown beak and pale pink feet. In breeding condition the brown plumage becomes black with a blue/green sheen, and they display a crest on its head and red-orange to purple facial skin and throat pouch. There is a yellow above the base of the beak, and yellow blending to red below.
Juveniles: Dull brown, pale purple-brown facial skin, and pale yellow-orange throat pouch.
