Adult: Brown to black (with a metalic blue/green sheen when in breeding condition), white throat, chest and belly. There maybe white patches on the wings and back. It has pale brown eyes dark grey beak and dull pink legs and feet. In breeding condition they develop a black crest on the top of the head, a pink eye ring, and the skin reddens on the face and on the throat below the beak.
Juveniles: Brown wings and back and brown facial skin.
