Comments: As treated here (following Kartesz, 1994 checklist), Acer saccharum has two varieties, var. saccharum and var. schneckii. The name "Acer saccharum ssp. [or var.] saccharum" has also been used to distinguish the sugar maple (here called Acer saccharum) from the black maple (here called Acer nigrum) if the two are combined as the same species.
