Dark Kangaroo Mouse

Microdipodops megacephalus

Dark Kangaroo Mouse 3

The dark kangaroo mouse (Microdipodops megacephalus) is a species of rodent in the family Heteromyidae. It is found in California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Utah in the United States. Dark kangaroo mice prefer to live in sandy areas with scrub bush and can commonly be found in traps during Autumn. Their fur is typically brown, black, or grey or a combination of all three. They have fat deposits in the middle of the tail, which is unique in North American small mammals. Because they use jumping for locomotion, tracks will have a pair of long feet side by side. Scat tends to be very small and dried up looking. Dark kangaroo mice can be found in Iron County, Utah.
