Merriam's Kangaroo Rat

Dipodomys merriami

Summary 3

Merriam's kangaroo rat, Dipodomys merriami, is a species of rodent in the family Heteromyidae. The species name commemorates Clinton Hart Merriam. In the field the tracks will look similar to any other rodent of it's size. The difference will be in the hind limb tracks, which, in a kangaroo rat, are much larger (see above labeled image), whereas they provide most if not all of the forward motion. The scat of this species on average is .2 cm in diameter, and .2 - .5 cm in length. This species of kangaroo rat has not been observed in Iron County.
