Commonly known as Preble's shrew or Malheur shrew (Sorex preblei) is a species of mammal in the family Soricidae. It is endemic to southern British Columbia in Canada and the western United States. These shrews live in arid to semiarid shrub-grass associations, in coniferous forest opening where sagebrush occurs, but have a strong affinity to wet areas such as stream banks, marshes and wet meadows. They have an elongate snout and are small and are grayish black with a silver underside. They have a bicolored tail that is olive-brown above, and hazel below and darkening toward the tip. Preble's shrew feeds on small invertebrates such as insects, worms, mullusks, and centipedes. This species is thought to be the rarest of Utah shrews and has only beeen found at the southern shore of the Great Salt Lake. It is not found in Iron County. Scat is vey small pellet-like and will be difficult to identify. Few photos are available for reference.
