Small to large tree up to 20 m tall, primary branches erect, horizontal, or descending, bark pale grey and smooth. Leaves 5 - 7 foliolate, margin leaflet entire. Flowers produced in leaf, with petals dark red. Fruits ussually globose, pericarp brown.
Phenology: flowering in February to April, ripe fruit in November.
The species extends from Antsiranana to the Sambirano region and perhaps Soalala. Occurrences in the south-east of the country appear to be Adansonia za.
