General description 4

Chaetoceros socialis forms short chains. The cells are heterovalvate with long barbed setae, arising from close to the centre of the valve. Cells have three short setae and one long one which is involved in connecting individual chains into colonies. Colonies are often round in shape. Pennate diatoms are often associated with individual chains.
