Northern Slimy Salamander

Plethodon glutinosus

Appearance 2

The total length is 11.5-20.5 cm. This large salamander produces sticky secretions from the tail when handled. The entire back surface is slate-colored; the back and sides are darker and sprinkled with silvery-white or metallic gold markings.

Habitat 2

Its habitat is swampy, forested areas. They can be found under rocks or dead logs.

Reproduction 2

Depending on the latitude of the population, they breed either annually or biannually. They reach sexual maturity at 2 years of age. They lay eggs from late spring to early summer.

Fun Fact 2

It is named the slimy salamander because it will completely coat your hand in a slimy, mucous from its skin when you pick it up.
