Eastern American Toad

Bufo americanus americanus

Appearance 2

5-10 centimeters long although usually 7.5 centimeters. Usually brown, although can be yellow to black, with rough, spotted, warty skin. White or yellow stomach. Distinguished from Fowler’s toad by only having one wart inside each spot.

Habitat 2

Anywhere with both semi-permanent water (ponds or pools), patches of dense plant growth and plenty of insects.

Behavior/Reproduction 2

Eggs are laid in shallow water in April or May. Thousands of eggs are laid in tubes of jelly. The eggs hatch in 3 to 12 days. The tadpoles take 40 to 70 days to become adults.

They are solitary, mostly nocturnal and are most active during warm weather. During the day they hide under rocks, logs, dead leaves and soil. They protect themselves from predators by excreting poisons from their warts. The poison is not harmful unless it is ingested. During the winter they burrow and hibernate.

Fun Fact 2

American Toads can shed their skin - which they afterwards eat.
