Thorny shrub with curved, cane-like stems. Five to ten sharply-pointed leaflets per leaf (stem of leaflets). Clusters of white to pink flowers in May to June. Bright red rose-hips develop in August and remain on the plant through winter.
Brought to the United States from Japan in 1866 as root stock for other rose plants and for erosion control and cattle “fences.”
Swamp rose (Rosa palustris), but the invasive has more flowers and grows to be larger.
Creates dense thickets in many environments that push out native species. Especially takes over open lands.
