Hessel's Hairstreak

Callophrys hesseli

Callophrys hesseli is resident along the eastern US seaboard (Scott 1986). Habitats are coastal-plain stream banks and swamps near the host. Host plants are restricted to one tree species, Chamaecyparis thyoides (Cupressaceae). Eggs are laid on the host plant singly. Individuals overwinter as pupae. There is a variable number of flights each year based on latitude; in the northern part of the range there is one flight with approximate time between May15-May30, and in the more southern part of their range there are two flights, late mar15-Apr30, and May1-June30(Scott 1986).
