Hemipenthes is a large genus of flies belonging to the family Bombyliidae (bee-flies). There are many described species, distributed throughout the Holarctic and Palearctic Ecozones. These are small to large robust flies with a body length of 5–14 mm. They can be distinguished from similar genera (Villa) by their wing venation.

This genus is kind of a mess. The treatment I'm currently using here is largely that of Joel Kits on BugGuide, but there is a very recent paper, A review of the North American species of Hemipenthes Loew, 1869 (Diptera: Bombyliidae) by Ávalos-Hernández that treats the genus differently. Kits critiques that paper for not examining many specimens and leaving many organisms still unidentifiable in the key, though it seems a better guide than most I've been able to find out there.
