Characteristics ²

The Common Garter Snake is medium in size, ranging from 46 to 91cm (18 to 36in). They are dark in color with distinct vertebral and lateral stripes. Red spots are often present and the dorsal scales are keeled. There are typically 7 upper labial scales, compared with 8 in the Terrestrial Garter Snake.
