Spea intermontana grows to a maximum length of 65mm (2.5in). The skin is relatively smooth, coloration is grey with light stripes. The tympanum is inconspicuous and pupils are vertical. The species is named for the black sharp edged spade on the underside of each hind foot.
Eggs are laid in small clusters attached to vegetation.
Tadpoles are small with a distinctive head structure, eyes are located close together atop the head.
