This is a little hopper with a big story! Transorchestia enigmatica was originally described to science based on specimens collected at Lake Merritt by pioneering biologist Jim Carlton when he was a teenager (you can read the original paper at the Biodiversity Heritage Library), along with amphipod expert E.L. Bousfield. Although it is almost certainly an introduced species and it has close relatives in Chile and New Zealand, no other beach hopper known to science looks quite like it, so it is an introduced species that's endemic to Lake Merritt!
