Cambarus graysoni

Distribution 2

Global Range: (20,000-200,000 square km (about 8000-80,000 square miles)) The range of this species includes the Nashville Basin, Highland Rim and western edge of the Cumberland Plateau in Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

Habitat and ecology 3

Habitat and Ecology

This species is commonly found in permanent streams under rocks (Bouchard 1978). It is also a secondary burrower (Bouchard 1978).

Systems
  • Freshwater

Habitat 4

Habitat Type: Freshwater

Comments: This species occurs in streams under rocks; but is also a secondary burrower (Schuster and Taylor, 2004). Although it occurred most often in woody debris on sandy substrates in stream runs in southeastern Alabama, this is likely due to lack of availability of other substrate choices such as gravel or pebbles rather than habitat preference (Stewart et al., 2010).

Justification
Cambarus graysoni has been assessed as Least Concern (LC). This species has an EOO in excess of 69,000 km2 and occurs in three US States. Furtherrmore, this speceis is a habitat generalist. It is unknown whether there are any major threat processes impacting this species.

Nature serve conservation status 6

Rounded Global Status Rank: G5 - Secure

Reasons: This species is secure and of least concern across its range. This species has an extent of occurrence of 30,000 sq. km and occurs in three U.S. States and is common in Kentucky and Tennessee, less so in northern Alabama. It is a habitat generalist occurring in streams. It is unknown whether there are any major threat processes impacting this species.

Environmental Specificity: Moderate. Generalist or community with some key requirements scarce.

Comments: Although it occurred most often in woody debris on sandy substrates in stream runs in southeastern Alabama, this is likely due to lack of availability of other substrate choices such as gravel or pebbles rather than habitat preference (Stewart et al., 2010).

Range description 7

This species is found in the Nashville Basin, Highland Rim, and western edge of the Cumberland Plateau in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama, USA (Bouchard 1978). In Kentucky, it is commonly encountered in the upper Green River drainage basin and sporadically in the Cumberland, Rolling Fork and Dix River drainages (Taylor et al. 2007, NatureServe 2009).

The Extent of Occurrence (EOO) of this species has been estimated to exceed 69,000 km2.
