Skippers

Hesperiidae

Summary 2

The hesperiidae family, commonly known as skippers, are distinguished from “true” butterflies by hooked antennae, stocky bodies and large compound eyes. With proportionally small wings compared to body size, they are known for their quick, darting flight pattern powered by fast wing beats of 15 to 20 per second.

Eighteen skipper species have been documented within Glacier National Park, nine of which are represented in the Glacier National Park Museum collection. The census conducted of “true” butterflies in the 1980s by Diane Debinski does not include skippers, although some specimens gathered during this activity are housed in the Park Museum.
