Swallowtails and Parnassians

Papilionidae

Summary 2

Papilionidae is a family of butterflies which include swallowtails (genus Papilio) and Parnassian (genus Parnassius). Most of the 552 species worldwide are native to the tropics, but eight species reside in Glacier National Park. Among the largest butterflies, Papilionidae are characterized by six full sized walking legs, proportionately short antennae ending in a curved club, and often sport tailed hind wings.

The Glacier Park Museum houses 43 specimens of Papilionidae, representing seven different species.
