North America Red-disked Alpines can be found across Canada from east of the Great Lakes through Alberta and Alaska as well as the northern edges of States from Michigan to Montana. This species prefers areas of acidic soils, such as large open, grassy bogs where caterpillars feed on bluegrasses. Red-disked Alpines may be biennial with adults flying from early May to mid-June.
Red-disked Alpines are not included on historic lists and no examples are housed in the Glacier National Park Museum. However, Steve Kohler has a confirmed sighting 2 miles southeast of Chief Mountain entrance on May 20, 1986. He also reports many sightings in Glacier County just outside of the Park.
