Brown Arctic (Chryxus Arctic)

Oeneis chryxus

Summary 2

The Brown Arctic (wingspan 45 - 54 mm) ranges from Alaska and Yukon south to Central California, east to New Mexico and the eastern edge of the Rockies, and the northern Great Lakes. It tolerates a wide variety of habitats including rocky hilltops, mountain meadows, northern prairies and open woodlands with grasses. Caterpillars over winter two years, feeding on grasses and sedges. Adults fly from May to June, feeding on flower nectar.

Although not yet recognized by ITIS, James Scott has shown recently that Oeneis chryxus should be considered two separate species, Oeneis chryxus and Oeneis calais. The population in Glacier National Park is likely O. Calais.
