Northwestern Fritillary

Speyeria hesperis

Summary 2

Often considered the same specie as the Atlantis Fritillary (S. atlantis), the Northwestern fritillary can be found in the western mountains from central Alaska, Yukon, and Northwest Territories south to central California, Arizona, and New Mexico. They prefer openings in moist Aspen and Spruce-Fir forests and woodlands, meadows, stream sides, and open hillsides bordered by forest. First stage caterpillars overwinter in leaf litter, emerging in the spring to feed on violet leaves. Adults fly from June to October, feeding on a variety of flowers including gaillardia, rabbitbrush, purple mints, and shrub cinquefoil.
