This species ranges across Canada and western and northeast United States south of the arctic. Milbert’s Tortoiseshell prefers high altitudes and cool places at lower altitudes including wet areas near woodlands, meadows, and avalanche chutes. Wingspan ranges from 31 to 38 mm. The larval food plants include nettles.
