The Red Admiral (wingspan 45 - 76 mm) is a wide spread species found in the temperate climates of North America and Eurasia. It prefers warmer areas, such as south Texas (where it over winters in North America), and migrates north in the spring. It adapts to a wide variety of habitats including forest margins, shorelines, meadows, gardens, and open woods. Red Admiral caterpillars rely on plants of the nettle family. Adults fly from March to October in the north.
