This wide spread species ranges across North America south of the tundra to Montana and Wyoming in the west and Missouri and North Carolina in the east, as well as temperate Eurasia. It can be found in, and near, deciduous and coniferous forests. Compton Tortoiseshells have a wingspan of 52 - 78 mm. Adults fly in July, overwinter and reappear from May to June. Caterpillars feed upon aspen, birches and willow.
