Wild cowpea is a sparsely hairy, short-lived perennial vine with trifoliate, ovate to lanceolate leaves that are 1 to 4 in. long and 0.5 to 2 in. wide. The leaves are sparsely pubescent on both surfaces. Racemes axillary, many-flowered. Flowers are yellow, and approximately 1 in. long. It has thin-shelled pods that have waxy margins when dry, and 2 in. long and 0.25 in. wide that range from brown to black. Occurs in wet tropical coastal areas of Africa, Central America, West Indies, southern United States and northern Australia.
