Found from mid intertidal to subtidal. Common but rarely abundant. Codium fragile has many subspecies. Codium fragile subspecies californicum is native and ranges from Sitka, Alaska to Bahia Asuncion, Baja California (MAC).

Morphology and identification 4

“Dead Man’s Fingers.” Spongy, tubular thalli, 10 – 30 cm long, Dark green to blackish-green, dichotomously branched. Often with Ceramium epiphytes. Spongy texture consists of intertwined siphons. Microscopically, utricles are unbranched and clavate (club shaped).
