lesser burnet

Acaena tenera

Summary 2

Acaena tenera, also known as lesser burnet, is similar to greater burnet (Acaena Magellanica) in its general structure but smaller in all its parts. Its leaves are a darker emerald green with distinct red margins, and the leaflets have more deeply incised margins. The flower heads are less compact than those of Greater burnet. They have similarly barbed seeds attached to the globular flower heads, and which also readily attach to clothing.

Comments 2

A species typical of scree near junctions with rock faces, scattered amongst Festuca grassland, in exposed Fellfield communities and as a pioneer plant in recently deglaciated areas.
