Summary 2

Densely tufted perennial grass with erect flowering stems up to 15 cm tall. Ligule: 4-8mm long, acuminate, membranous. Leaves: Leaf blades, smooth, needle-like, 3-6 cm long, 0,5 cm wide. Flowers: Panicle 3-5 cm long cylindrical, contracted, greenish or purplish; spikelet 2-flowered, 2-3 mm long; glumes subequal; lemma 2-4 mm long with basal tuft of hairs; awn 5-7 mm long, arising from lower one third of lemma, bent and spirally twisted in basal part.

Distribution 2

Introduced to South Georgia, can be found at Stromness Bay.
Native to the Falkland Islands

Comments 3

Found in the Karrakatta Valley. Take care to distinguish from the native hairgrass Deschampsia antarctica. The bent spirally twisted awn is a good distinguish feature.
