A spike with long thin spikelets in two rows up the stem. Leaf blades stiff, without long hairs. Visible awns. Mostly glabrous. Prickle hairs only on edges of leaf. (Tor-grass is sometimes treated as a sub-species of B. pinnatum, which has prickle hairs all over underside of leaf and is mostly pubescent.)
