Grappletail

Octogomphus specularis

Summary 3

Grappletail inhabits creeks and small rivers that have a mix of rocks, riffles and small pools. Since many of our swift streams in San Mateo County are difficult to access, this Ode may be easy to miss. Check upper Gazos Creek and accessible sections of Pescadero Creek. Grappletail gets its name for its unusual appendages, which look like a grappling hook.
